Introduction to stepper motors

Have you been browsing around the Internet and come across a growing number of projects that use a stepper motor? Their popularity is increasing due to decreasing purchase price and also the number of discarded printers you can harvest them from - which leads to all sorts of uses such as X-Y plotters, home-made CNC machines and more. However understanding is key and they're quite different to regular DC motors.

Thankfully the folks at the EmbedJournal website have published a simple yet thorough explanation about stepper motors, including the different types, their wiring methods, and have also taken a few apart so you can see the internal rotors and more. Furthermore they run through the theory of driving sequences which makes coding for them much easier. So to find out more, visit their informative website. And for more, we're on twitter and Google+, so follow us for news and product updates as well.

If you're looking into controlling a stepper motor (or DC motors) from your Arduino or compatible, check out our new HBRIDGE: DC/stepper motor shield. Based around the powerful Allegro A4954 H-bridge driver IC you can control two DC motors with complete ease, or one bipolar stepper motor. With connections for external power management, a complete beginners' guide and documentation - motor control couldn't be any easier. For more information and to order, visit the HBRIDGE: page
